The short haired dogs are easier to take care of as far as grooming. Long haired dogs require brushing and trimming to keep them looking good. Temperature: What is your comfortable temperature in your house? If you like your home warm, a short haired dog is a good choice. If you like your home cold, a long haired dog is a good choice. Size and exercise: The amount of exercise your dog needs differs with breeds. Some breeds have more energy to burn and need a larger area to run around. Temperament: Different breeds are known for their temperaments, but there are exceptions to this rule. Find out from the breeder, what type of temperament the parents of the puppy have before you purchase it. Free or cheap dogs: There is no such thing as a free or cheap dog. Once you commit to purchasing a dog, they all need daily care. This includes food, shots, worming medications, flea and tick control. Time. Do you have the time it takes to train, play with, and be a companion to your dog? If you are never home, it is not fair to a dog to leave it alone. They need love and attention and will get into mischief when they are bored.
